Buzzard by Bill Cuthbert

Common Buzzards are  seen every day, most often on telegraph posts on the look out for food on the ground below. Many other raptors including Golden Eagle and White tailed Sea Eagle, Hen Harrier and Short eared Owl are regularly seen on our tours. If we are lucky we may also see Merlin and Peregrine.Red throated Divers and the occasional Black throated Diver can be seen on our lochs. From autumn through to spring there are Great Northern Diver in the sea lochs and coastal waters, and a few Slavonian Grebe winter on Loch na Keal

The habitat of Mull is varied and supports many bird species. Along its coast line and sea lochs can be seen (and heard) Oystercatcher, Comon Sandpiper, Curlew, other waders and several different ducks, Wigeon, Teal, Goldeneye, Red breasted Merganser and Eider.

The island is home to a large number of Red  Deer, a small herd of Fallow Deer and lots of Rabbits and Hares which are a main food source for birds of prey. We don't have any Squirrels, Badgers or Foxes on the island. Mink are beginning to be a problem to ground nesting birds and small mammals

Minkie Whale

Cetaceans can be seen from land on 'Discover Mull' tours with harbour Porpoise the most common. Minkie Whales are seen on a few tours each year but we have yet to see any Killer Whales. Bottlenose Dolphins and Common Dolphins have been seen and we are always on the look out for Basking Sharks in the late summer.

Mull is a naturalists' heaven with several ecologies wrapped in one small island, but we wouldn't have seen a quarter of what's on offer without Pam & Arthur's insider knowledge. You get a class act when you hire them for a whole day, along with some comical patter and Pam's homemade veg soup, sarnies, flapjacks and cake.
